Savage Race
About a month ago my services were requested for covering a very popular OCR event: Savage Race. Race Pace Photos hired me to join their team of excellent photographers. In this post, I cover the second location I covered, the Savage Banner. This is Part 4 of a 4 part post.
Lesson Learned
Beauty Dish vs Soft Boxes
When shooting a single subject, you have the capacity to tightly control the lighting around the subject, opening up many possibilities, whether they are softboxes, brollys, and in this case, beauty dishes. When attempting to use a dish to shoot a group of 5 people or more, the narrow beam spread prove to be an issue. It created falloff around the edges of the photo; an effect that I was not looking for. A better idea would have been to use a soft box. Softboxes have a much wider spread across an area, however it eats up exposure and takes a longer time to set up.
Lens selection and Library
I chose the 24-105mm lens because it is the longest one I have. However, a longer lens, notably a 70-200mm lens, would do a much better job. My lens library is relatively small, but it covers between 16mm to 135mm (216mm if I use my backup 30D), however if I want to have better optics for sports, I absolutely need to save money for a Canon EF 70-200mm 1:2.8 L IS II USM lens. Currently I save some money for every photo gig that I accomplish: so far I have saved about $400, which is $2,100 short of my goal. Better get more gigs!
Overall Experience and Conclusion
I really enjoyed shooting this course, it was well built and organized. The staff was very helpful, directing me where to park and letting us know where the obstacles were. The runners were all excited to be there, even though they went through some hard obstacles at the end they were glad they did it. Overall it was a good experience for everyone involved and I recommend for everyone to check out Savage Race, register, and run it!
